Introducing Turunan: downhill racing in your browser

Layered mountain ridges drawn in fine lines, with a winding race line in blue and small gate flags along it.

Today we are introducing Turunan, a downhill mountain bike racing game that runs right in your browser. Turunan is Indonesian for “the way down”, and that is the whole idea: line up with nine other riders at the top of a mountain and be the first one to the bottom.

It is free. There is nothing to install and no account to make. It runs on a phone or a computer, and a race takes about three minutes. Play it now at turunan.glasier.app.

Six tracks across the archipelago

Every track is inspired by a real kind of Indonesian landscape, with its own lines, jumps, and shortcuts.

Track Setting Length Start altitude
Jalur Kaldera Pine forest on the slope of a caldera, late afternoon 3.0 km 1,620 m
Sawah Terasering Down between rice terraces and coconut palms 2.8 km 980 m
Lautan Pasir Volcanic sand below a smoking crater, at dawn 3.2 km 2,350 m
Kebun Teh Rows of tea on misty hills 2.9 km 1,480 m
Hutan Hujan Red earth under a tropical rainforest canopy 2.7 km 1,150 m
Karst Gunungkidul White limestone, karst hills, and teak forest 2.9 km 420 m

Seasons change the ride. The dry season, the turn of the season, and the rainy season each bring their own sky, grip, and puddles, so the same track never quite rides the same way twice.

Easy to pick up

On a phone, Turunan plays with one thumb. Slide sideways to steer, pull down to brake, and tap for actions. Pedalling, jumps, and tricks happen on their own, so you can focus on your line. Prefer buttons? There is a button layout too.

On a keyboard, steer with the arrow keys, tap up twice to sprint, and hold Space then release it at the lip of a ramp to launch.

Fly, style, and fight for position

Downhill is not only about speed.

  • Tricks that count. Chain flips, spins, and tailwhips into combos for style points and adrenaline. Land before the trick is finished and you will be tasting dirt.
  • Rough racing. Bump, kick, swing a bamboo pole, or throw a coconut at the rider in front. Expect them to return the favour.
  • Bikes with personality. A stable downhill bike, a do-it-all enduro, a nimble freeride frame, a light hardtail, a fatbike that loves sand and mud, and an e-MTB that powers up climbs but hates tricks.

Ten riders from across Indonesia, from Bandung and Bali to Makassar and Banda Aceh, fill the grid.

More than one race

  • Career. Six rounds on six tracks, with points for every finishing position, a championship table, and coins to spend on new bikes.
  • Daily Challenge. Every day, everyone gets the same track, season, and bike. Compare times on a casual leaderboard (in beta), keep your streak alive, and earn 250 coins for your first finish of the day.
  • Race your friends. Open a room and share a four-character code. Up to six people can race together, and computer riders fill the rest of the grid.
  • Replays. After every race, watch the last 40 seconds again from cinematic camera angles.

Turunan also has its own background music, inspired by gamelan and generated live in the browser. You can switch between Indonesian and English at any time.

Made for the web

We built Turunan so that a link is all you need. It loads quickly, it uses lighter textures on phones and slower connections, and it does not ask for anything before you can ride. If you want the story of how it was built, read Rebuilding Turunan Downhill from scratch.

See you at the bottom.

Free, in your browser, on a phone or a computer.
