The Indonesian Landscapes Behind Turunan

A line drawing of rice terraces, a volcanic crater, and limestone hills linked by a blue trail.

One run in Turunan takes you through wet rice terraces. On the next, you can follow a trail of dust across volcanic sand or take a jump between limestone hills. The bike has the same controls on each course, but the terrain changes what you see ahead and how you carry speed down the slope.

Sawah Terasering

On a hillside, rice fields can step down the slope in bands. In Bali, farming communities connect terraces through a shared irrigation system called subak. UNESCO’s overview of Bali’s rice terraces

In Sawah Terasering, those steps give the hillside its shape. The trail cuts between fields and coconut palms. On a rainy run, puddles appear on the trail and the far side of the valley fades into mist.

Riders descend a wet track lined with coconut palms in Sawah Terasering.

Try the course once in the dry season and once in the rain with the same bike. Through the first few bends, notice how quickly the bike responds when you steer. Give yourself a little more room to turn on the wet run.

Lautan Pasir

Lautan Pasir means “sea of sand.” The Tengger Sand Sea near Mount Bromo is a real example of the open volcanic terrain the name evokes. Indonesia Travel’s guide to Bromo Tengger Semeru

Turunan sets its sand course at dawn. Low light draws out the ridges, and the dust left by the pack hangs over the trail. You can often see where the riders ahead turned by watching the dust behind them.

Loose sand slows the bike. Pick your line into the bend early and see how much speed you can carry out of it without another sprint.

Karst Gunungkidul

The Gunung Sewu karst region, which includes part of Gunungkidul, is known for its cone-shaped limestone hills. UNESCO’s guide to Gunung Sewu

In the game, limestone hills and teak trees frame the trail. You get a clear view of the crests from below. In the image, the lead group is already in the air while the nearest rider is still climbing to the lip.
